About Energy ReLeaf

We make solar shingles: a roof that is also the power system, installed by roofing crews. The company was started by Peter, Paul and Maria Reese and is based in Minneapolis.

Why we build the roof, not a panel on top of it.

Every year millions of American homes get a new roof, and many of those homeowners want solar. The usual answer is two projects: a roofer re-shingles, then a solar company bolts racking through the new roof and hangs panels on it. We think that is one project too many.

An Energy ReLeaf shingle is the roof covering and the solar module in one part. It goes down in courses like any shingle, with standard roofing tools, so the crew that would have re-roofed the house builds the solar roof instead. Courses are offset by 50%, so the shingles follow hips and valleys instead of forcing a rectangle onto the roof. There's no racking bolted through the roof, and if one shingle is ever damaged, its solar insert comes out by removing six screws.

The touch-safe, plug-and-play connectors keep electrician labor to a minimum, always subject to local requirements. We strongly recommend a licensed electrician on site during installation to observe the connections and test the system. Battery storage is built into the roof, so by default the system doesn't feed back to the grid and can be turned on right away, without waiting on utility interconnection. Owners who want to send power to the grid can.

The company's roots go back to the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, when Peter Reese started a nonprofit to put microgrids into Puerto Rico. That work is why we care about roofs that keep running through bad weather, and why the shingle is tested as a roof: UL 790 Class A fire, UL 1897 wind and TAS 100 wind-driven rain.

How we work

Built with roofers, not around them.

Homeowners

One roof, one project

If your roof is due, the new roof can be the solar system. A free property review checks the roof before anyone climbs a ladder.

Pitched-roof buildings

Apartments, townhome communities, churches, offices, schools and pole barns. If the roof can take shingles, it can make power.

Commercial pitched roofs

Installed by an Energy ReLeaf cooperative member installer, the roof and solar carry a 25-year warranty. Batteries and electronics carry a 10-year warranty (third-party components). Details are on the warranty and certifications page.
